Stronger Emerging Leaders Mean Better, Faster Results

“I have been coaching my team, but they aren’t delivering results.”

Somewhere along the evolution of leadership development we have conflated “coaching” with “leading.” Coaching is an important leadership tool, but it is not leading.

Emerging Leaders have come into their leadership roles at a time where “coaching” is emphasized but often misunderstood or miscategorized as leading.

As a leader, you are responsible for developing your team, managing the work and delivering results. You are accountable for continuous improvement of process and the growth of the people in your leadership care.

That means, in addition to coaching, you must have the ability (and willingness) to give direct, performance feedback. Feedback that is undoubtedly made more difficult by the fact that you might once have been peers with your now direct reports.

To help that process be more effective, start by setting clear expectations:

✅ Our shared work: Who is accountable for what? What does “done” look like?

✅ Our roles: Here is what you can expect from me. Here is what I expect from you.

✅ Our process: Who makes decisions and when? How will we track our process and workflow? How will we measure success?
