One detail is how people arrive and how they leave a meeting space. As the leader, it's your job to ensure that is a welcoming and positive process.
We know this in our personal lives, right? How we greet our partners and children when we come and go matters, saying goodnight- acknowledging when someone comes home, etc.
When a group stops to say good-bye or hello to a team member, it says, “you belong, you are important enough to stop action to get you included and we share the responsibility for getting you integrated into whatever we are doing.”
When we don’t stop to acknowledge our colleagues, there is something that says, “you’re not worthy of stopping action with the group to say good-bye.”
So the next time your colleague arrives late or leaves early, remember to be the leader who says, “you are more important than what we are talking about in this moment" by saying “hello!”
