The number one derailer of difficult conversations is the narrative we carry into them.
We tell ourselves stories about others with the polarization of Victims to Villains- that’s how many of us learn about the stereotypical- or archetypical- range of who and how people act through fables, media and early socialization.
Victims and Villains makes for good storytelling, but not for reaching a mutual outcome.
Even when we are operating with the best belief about the other person and their positive intent in mind, our egos can drag us back to the narrative framework of Victims and Villains. We are human and fallible and defensive.
Transformational leadership requires us to be radically present to hear other people’s stories and to commit to staying true to the person, not to our Victim and Villain narrative.
